Seismic Survey Work Underway Between Boodjamulla and Croydon

June – November 2025

The Geological Survey of Queensland, in collaboration with Geoscience Australia, is currently conducting a deep crustal reflection seismic survey along a corridor stretching from Boodjamulla (Lawn Hill) to Croydon. Fieldwork is scheduled to run from June to November 2025. This major scientific initiative is designed to improve geological understanding of the region by mapping rock structures deep beneath the Earth’s surface. The data collected will help identify new mineral exploration opportunities and support future land use planning and scientific research.

How the Survey Works

The survey uses Vibroseis trucks that send low-frequency sound waves into the ground. These sound waves are harmless and are reflected off rock layers below, then recorded by surface sensors called geophones. This method is commonly used in geoscience and is similar in principle to a medical ultrasound.

What to Expect

  • A convoy of 10–15 slow-moving vehicles, including Vibroseis trucks and support caravans

  • Up to 40 personnel working along the route

  • Temporary noise and vibration similar to a road train passing

  • Operations mostly conducted along existing roads and access tracks

All efforts are being made to minimise impacts on local communities, properties, the environment, and cultural heritage values.

Collaboration and Transparency

The project team is engaging directly with landholders, Traditional Owners, and local councils, including Croydon Shire Council, to ensure the work is carried out respectfully and transparently.

Once collected and verified, all survey data will be made publicly available to support ongoing research, exploration, and regional development.
