Croydon’s community spirit was on full display this Australia Day as we gathered to honour the individuals and events that make our shire a truly remarkable place to live. From sporting excellence to quiet acts of service and incredible displays of resilience, this year’s award recipients embody the heart and soul of the outback.
Mayor Trevor Pickering took the stage to share the stories of these local legends. Here are our 2026 winners:

Citizen of the Year – Brendan Murphy: Recognised for his dependable "behind-the-scenes" help with community events and for bringing magic to Croydon as our local Santa.

Young Citizen of the Year – Willow Evans: A creative and kind-hearted role model who supports local markets and brings positive energy to everyone she meets.

Volunteer of the Year – Gary Dufficey: A mainstay at the Men’s Shed and local fundraisers, Gary is always the first to fire up the barbecue or restore our historic machinery.

Event of the Year – Neuroblastoma Awareness: Organised by Cheyenne Pickering, this powerful event turned personal hardship into a massive community effort for childhood cancer awareness.

Senior Sportsperson – Mandy Pickering: An exceptional rodeo and campdraft competitor who mentors young riders and represents Croydon with pride across the region.

Junior Sportsperson – Mitchell Greenwood: A record-breaking athlete and Age Champion who leads by example with humility and determination.
