Lake Belmore

Lake Belmore has provided Croydon with a resource more precious than the gold once mined throughout the area – water.

Lake Belmore is the aquatic jewel of the Gulf Savannah, as it is the largest body of freshwater in the region providing locals and tourists alike, with the opportunity to swim, fish, ski, and canoe & socialise.  The beautiful lake & its recreational facilities is one of the region’s most popular tourist attractions.

Situated just 4kms from town on a fully sealed bitumen road, the earth wall dam was constructed in 1995 as the town’s primary water supply. Prior to 1996, Croydon mainly obtained its water from a number of bores, which with time were becoming dry and disused mining pits such as the Golden Butterfly. The lack of readily available reliable water resources compelled the Croydon Shire Council to seek funding assistance from the Commonwealth & State Governments to remedy the ongoing problem and a decision was made to construct a dam, which would be able to supply the township with a reliable quantity and quality of water.
